What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese hands on energy healing technique dating back to the early 1920s. Reiki is NOT massage therapy. Rei means "universal" and ki (like chi) means "energy", and the word Reiki transcends to “guided life force energy”. When one’s “life force energy” is low, we feel stressed, and are more likely to get sick, or heal slower from an injury/surgery. When our energy is high, we have the capacity to feel relaxed, happy, and be healthy. Reiki works on all levels- physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual and will therefore heal on all levels. Reiki shifts and aligns one's energy back into balance and creates many beneficial effects to include relaxation, feelings of peace, security and well being. The practitioner uses a healing touch technique by placing his/her hands over (or directly on top of) your body through standard hand positions.
Reiki is like acupuncture without needles; it brings the body/mind into balance. It reduces stress and anxiety, relieves tension in tight muscles, and reduces anxiety. It returns an organism (human or animal) to a state of balance, through relaxation, allowing healing to commence.
history of reiki
Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui 1865–1926 after a 21-day meditation on Mt. Kurama in Japan in the late 1800s. One student of Usui's trained 22 other Reiki masters, including Phyllis Furomoto in the United States, to use and teach this healing system. From those original 22, Reiki has spread around the world and is now used by thousands of people today. Hospitals use Reiki to calm patients, the VA is using Reiki healing modalities on Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorders, veterinarians and animal shelters use it on animals.
What is a Reiki Session Like?
The relaxing state that people are in when they have a Reiki session is very conducive to healing. Reiki has been likened to meditation in its effects, but not everyone meditates the same. A person who is receiving Reiki will respond to the treatment in the way that is appropriate for them at that time. Also, as with meditation, the effects last beyond the time of the session. And the results are always seen - whether mildly relaxing or dramatically healing.
During a Reiki session, the individual remains fully clothed while relaxing comfortably on a massage table or sitting up in a supported chair. The practitioner gently places his or her hands in different positions on or above the body. Through these hand positions, Reiki energy flows through the practitioner, out of his/her hands onto you. Each hand position is held for approximately 2-5 minutes, depending on how much Reiki is being absorbed in each position. A typical session will last about one hour.
The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. Most report feeling deeply relaxed and peaceful during and after a session. Others may experience warmth, coolness, or tingling sensations during the session where hands are positioned. You may even fall asleep. The experience is different for each person. Reiki and Healing Touch ‘meet you’ where you are. Many energy based therapies, such as Reiki, can affect you for 2 or 3 days following your session, therefore it is recommended to drink plenty of water during the days following the treatment to flush out any toxins. Your system is adjusting and this is part of your body’s natural healing process.
